Chess.com the world biggest online chess powerhouse has launched Gambit (Gambit.com), a free-to-play social poker site engineered to transform how the digital world learns and competes in Texas Hold'em. On Gambit.com, poker is played as a competitive, esports-style mind sport where no money is exchanged.
Before the official launch, Gambit.com held a three-month open beta that drew over 75,000 players, 100,000 completed strategy lessons, and more than 20 million hands dealt. On top of that, the showcase Gambit Cup attracted 1,453 players with zero money on the line, proving that online poker can thrive within an esports ecosystem as well.
From Casino Gambling to Official Mind Sport Status
For a long time, the mainstream considered poker as a form of casino gambling, but in recent years there has been a wind of change in the air.
In 2024, the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) welcomed the World Poker Federation to join their ranks and officially recognized poker as an intellectual mind sport. Streamed live to a global audience, the showcase tournament was co-hosted by Chess.com Chief Chess Officer Danny Rensch and chess streamer Alexandra Botez. The event drew 1,453 players who battled through fast-paced blind structures over 2 hours before player SaVaToP1gG was crowned inaugural Gambit Cup champion.
Rather than fixating on prize money figures, the broadcast leaned entirely into esports entertainment: live equity displays, real-time tactical breakdowns, and lighthearted commentary. The event proved that online poker has the potential also as Esports.
Bridging the Gap Between Gamers and Grinders
Gambit bridges this gap for millions of casual chess and strategy enthusiasts who might find real-money poker rooms intimidating. By removing financial risk while preserving the strategic complexity of Texas Hold'em, the platform functions as an interactive training ground.
Much like social poker platforms such as No Big Deal Poker (NBDP), which connects play-money leaderboards to live tournament packages at events like the WSOPC and The Festival Series, Gambit illustrates that competitive poker is expanding far beyond the traditional real-money poker.
