While a $10 million score and a WSOP Main Event bracelet usually represent the pinnacle of a poker career, for Espen Uhlen Jørstad, there was still a glaring omission on his resume: a Norwegian national title. That void was finally filled at Banco Casino as Jørstad outlasted a massive 786-entry field to take down the 2026 Norges-Mesterskapet (NM) Main Event. On the 25th anniversary of the festival, the hometown hero turned a €800 investment into a €102,000 payday and a legacy-defining victory.
The tournament, which has found a semi-permanent home in the Slovak capital, generated a prize pool of €543,284. Despite the international setting, the atmosphere remained purely Norwegian, particularly at a final table dominated by a cluster of players from the Trondheim region.
From Short Stack to "Norgesmester"
The road to the title was far from a "wire-to-wire" performance for the GGPoker ambassador. Jørstad entered the heads-up phase facing a significant 3:1 chip deficit against Bjørge Storflor, a local farmer and carpenter whose aggressive play had dominated the early stages of the final table.
However, the high-stakes experience of Jørstad proved to be the differentiator. Over a grueling, tactical battle, Jørstad navigated the variance of heads-up play with his trademark composure, eventually flipping the script and putting Storflor on the ropes.
The Final Hand: Sevens Hold for the Win
The match, and the championship, was decided in a classic pre-flop collision. Storflor, looking for a double-up to stay in the hunt, moved all-in withA♣7♥. Jørstad made the call with7♣7♦, putting his pocket pair to the test. The dealer spread a board of10♠2♥3♦6♠9♥, offering no help to the overcard and confirming Jørstad as the champion.
The win marks a full circle for Jørstad, who admitted that the relief of finally winning his "home" event was as powerful as any of his previous global accolades. For the Norwegian poker community, seeing their most decorated representative finally lift the NM trophy was a fitting end to the festival's silver anniversary.
