Sometimes in tournament poker, a player catches lightning in a bottle and becomes completely unstoppable. That was the reality for the rest of the final table at the 2026 888poker LIVE Barcelona Main Event this week. 

Putting on an absolute clinic in big-stack abuse, Spanish online professional Alvaro Murciano dominated the 350-entry field to capture his first major live title. Murciano walked away from the Casino Barcelona with the prestigious gold-plated trophy and a career-best live cash of €50,000.

While Murciano primarily makes his living grinding online cash games and tournaments, he has become a feared regular on the 888poker live circuit. The motivation for this specific event ran deep.

Last year, Murciano came agonizingly close to securing a major victory at the 888poker LIVE Main Event in Madrid, eventually bowing out in second place to Ian Simpson. Fast forward 16 months, and Murciano found himself back under the bright lights with a chip lead he refused to relinquish. The victory provided the ultimate catharsis. Murciano told the press following his victory:

I ended up heads-up last year. It means a lot to win and take that personal revenge.

The €888 buy-in tournament generated a handsome €263,424 prize pool, but the final table quickly devolved into a race for second place.

Murciano began the final day as the chip leader and immediately applied pressure. The turning point occurred during five-handed play when Murciano scooped a massive pot to eliminate Michael Falcon, giving the Spaniard control of a staggering 80% of the chips in play. It took just five more hands for Murciano to send Pol Silva (4th) and 888poker streamer Jesus Ramos (3rd) to the rail.

Heads-up play against German Zafra was a mere formality. Holding a towering 16-to-1 chip advantage, Murciano won every pot of the final duel, ultimately sealing the tournament when his king-nine turned a pair of kings against Zafra's queen-nine.
