Maurice Hawkins Caught on Video in Violent Home-Game Fight
- Viral video shows Maurice Hawkins attacked in a poker game.
- Conflicting accounts of the altercation with no charges filed.
- Incident highlights ongoing controversies surrounding Hawkins.
A viral video of 21-time WSOP Circuit ring winner Maurice Hawkins being punched repeatedly in a private poker game in Florida is ripping through social media and it’s landing on a community that’s already bitter over years of backing disputes and unpaid-debt allegations.
Video Shows One-Sided Beating in Palm Beach County Game
On November 27, some published footage emerged showing Hawkins seated at a poker table in a private game when a larger opponent walks over and lands a flurry of punches before players step in to separate.
According to the partcipants, the incident took place in a private poker game in Palm Beach County, Florida. The video first hit the wider poker audience after ACR pro Rob Kuhn posted a clip on X with the caption:
“BREAKING – MAURICE HAWKINS GETS BEAT UP IN POKER ROOM”.
From there it was reposted across Reddit, Instagram, Facebook, and poker forums with headlines like “Poker Legend Maurice Hawkins Brutally Assaulted During High-Stakes Home Game” and “Maurice Hawkins getting beat up in a private game (no audio).”(Reddit)
Some social posts and meme accounts paired the clip with lines like “Couldn’t happen to a better perso,” capturing how eagerly parts of the poker community seemed to rejoice at seeing him on the wrong end of the confrontation.
Conflicting Accounts: Trash Talk, Race, and a “Totally Unprovoked Attack”
Details about what sparked the fight are messy and somewhat contradictory, even among people said to be in the room.
Anonymous sources are saying the confrontation grew out of Hawkins “running his mouth about how good of a boxer he is, poking and talking shit to another player who had enough.” The same source claims Hawkins has to pay up front to join the game while other regulars play on credit, adding more tension to the dynamic.
But one named player in the game, Tray Rock, told that it was a “totally unprovoked attack” by a player identified only as Eugene and not related to any poker hand or alleged debt.
Rock describes a table conversation where he and Hawkins said they were of “African American nationality,” prompting Eugene to argue that wasn’t a nationality at all.
According to Rock, Hawkins replied along the lines of “What you wanna do, box about it?”, after which Eugene allegedly walked over from the 2-seat to the 7-seat and started punching Hawkins while he was still seated.

So far, coverage from other mediea outlets and other sources hasn’t cited any serious injuries or police charges, and the incident is being treated more as a viral clip than a criminal case.
Hawkins Fires Back on X: “Sucker Punch” and “Sneak Attack”
Hawkins quickly posted his own response on X, sharing a second clip that appears to show him confronting the same opponent after the initial attack.
“The Narratives are hilarious,” Hawkins wrote. “A guy tried to sucker punch me and sneak attack me while I am in my seat. Then you post I got my ass whoop… What you think happens if I don’t get grabbed when I got to my feet. Here you go. The truth of what happened.”
The post frames the initial punches as a “sneak attack” and suggests the situation would have looked different if the two hadn’t been separated once Hawkins stood up.
A Decade of Backing Disputes and Court Judgments
The reaction to the fight isn’t happening in a vacuum. For years, Hawkins has been one of the most polarizing figures in live poker, a record-setting WSOP Circuit crusher on one hand, and the subject of multiple high-profile disputes with backers on the other.
The Hal Lewis Staking Lawsuit (2016–2018)
In 2017, Tallahassee attorney Hal Lewis sued Hawkins in Florida, claiming he was owed around $22,788 from a 2016 WSOP staking arrangement and alleging some of the bankroll was lost in unauthorized side gambling.(Miami Herald)
Hawkins publicly disputed Lewis’s version of events, calling the lawyer a “big bully” in local coverage and insisting he owed nothing.(floridapolitics.com)
By mid-2018, it was reported that the case had been resolved amicably, with both sides describing it as a “misunderstanding” and the legal fight effectively put to bed.
The Randy Garcia Judgment: $115K and Ongoing Friction
The far bigger and more enduring controversy has been with staker Randy Garcia:
- In 2019, Garcia sued Hawkins in Palm Beach County over an unpaid backing deal. A judge awarded Garcia a $115,828.34 judgment, according to court documents summarised by poker media.
- It was later reported that Garcia claimed he’d only received about $10,000 over several years, leaving roughly six figures unpaid, while Hawkins insisted he had paid more and would “pay him when I can.”
As late as 2024, it was noted that Garcia was still publicly saying Hawkins owed him six figures and calling him a “scammer,” pointing to the outstanding judgment despite Hawkins continuing to cash large live scores.
Those are Garcia’s allegations and characterisations; the confirmed facts are the civil judgment and the dispute over how much has actually been repaid.
Community Response: Schadenfreude, Concern, and a Line Crossed
Given that backdrop, many replies to the fight video leaned into pure schadenfreude. Reddit threads and forum posts are full of lines like “There’s not a single poker player alive who deserves to get beat more than him” or “poker karma,” explicitly tying the violence to the backing disputes.
But not everyone is cheering. Some posters, including people who have previously criticised Hawkins, have pointed out that:
- Civil debt disputes don’t justify physical assault, particularly in a setting where everyone is supposed to be safe to play.
- Private games with uneven rules about who must pay up front versus who can play on credit can be a powder keg when mixed with alcohol, side action, and existing grudges.
And while the “couldn’t happen to a better person” meme captures a segment of feeling in the community, others worry that normalising violence, even against unpopular figures, is a bad precedent for poker.
A Reputation on the Line, Again
With over $6 million in live earnings and a record 21 WSOP Circuit rings, Hawkins remains one of the most successful circuit players of all time.
But every new controversy, from staking courtroom battles to public confrontations with backers, and now a viral fist fight in a Florida home game, piles more baggage onto a name that was already divisive.
For now, the Palm Beach County incident looks like a self-contained explosion in a private game: no charges, no tournament penalties, just a brutal video and a lot of angry opinions.
What it does change is the optics. The next time Hawkins sits down at a table, a chunk of the poker world won’t just see the ring leader on the Hendon Mob page, they’ll see the guy on their timeline, taking punches in a chair, while the comment section argues over whether he had it coming.
