Cappiello Controls the Final Table as Italy Dominates Battle of Malta 2025

It was a long day at the office, but Candido Cappiello made it look like routine work. The Italian player outlasted a record field at the 2025 Battle of Malta Main Event to walk away with €225,770 following a heads-up deal with fellow countryman Luigi Andrea Shehadeh.
BoM Main Event 2025
The tournament attracted 6,039 entries at €600 apiece, building a €2.7 million prize pool and drawing players from all over Europe. Five of the eight players at the final table were Italian, including all four who made it to the final stretch.
Among them, Cappiello was already attracting attention. Former Battle of Malta champ Gabriele Re was so impressed with his play on Day 3 that he told the media:
Make sure to mention that guy will win. He’s by far the best player in the field.
Turns out he was right. Cappiello started the final day just behind Latvia’s Davis Modans in chips, but quickly took control of the table. Within two levels, he was well ahead, and the lead only widened from there. Modans would later bust in sixth after running into Cappiello’s pocket aces, a pivotal hand that more or less sealed the table.
Heads-up play barely got off the ground before a deal was struck. The title was still up for grabs, but the money was settled: Cappiello banked €225,770, while Shehadeh secured €181,750.
