The poker community lost one of its most consequential figures on March 23, 2026, when David Sklansky died of heart failure in Las Vegas at the age of 78.

Few names carry more intellectual weight in the game's history. While Doyle Brunson gave poker its soul and Stu Ungar gave it its mythology, Sklansky gave it a brain.

From Actuary Dropout to Architect of Modern Poker Strategy

Sklansky grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey, and studied at the University of Pennsylvania before leaving to work as an actuary.

That foundation in probability and risk management never left him. Every concept he introduced to poker, from pot odds to semi-bluffing, was framed through the lens of expected value, turning what many still viewed as a gambling game into a discipline with measurable, learnable edges.

The Fundamental Theorem That Still Runs Every Solver

His most lasting intellectual contribution is the Fundamental Theorem of Poker: every time a player makes a decision that differs from what they would make with full information about their opponent's hand, their opponent gains. It sounds simple. It is not. That one principle underpins range-based thinking, GTO study, and the entire modern solver ecosystem Sklansky unquestionably inspired.

The Theory of Poker, published in 1983 by Two Plus Two Publishing, introduced the Fundamental Theorem of Poker to the world.

Three Bracelets, 14 Books, One Undeniable Legacy

On the felt, Sklansky won three WSOP bracelets between 1982 and 1983 and recorded over $473,000 in WSOP earnings.

His biggest single score was a third-place finish at the 2006 WPT Championship worth $419,040. Off the felt, his 14 books published through Two Plus Two Publishing remain the most cited texts in poker education. His 1976 title Hold'em Poker was the first book ever written on Texas Hold'em.

Poker will keep evolving. Solvers will keep improving. But every time a player thinks in terms of ranges, equity, and EV, they are thinking in a framework David Sklansky built. That is a legacy no river card can change.
